October 4 Citrus Heights Council Candidates Forum - update

What a great opportunity to be able to go to one place and listen to all of the  candidates that are running for the 2 open seats for the City of Citrus Heights Council......  It really makes a difference. You listen to each one as each one answers the same question asked. I was impressed that the other 3 Council Members were in the audience listening to the question and answers. I am just so impressed with our City Council and City staff.

Trish Dawson, Brett Daniels, Jeff Slowey, Jim Monteton, Charles Stone and Sue Frost

Rick Doyle, Moderator - Thank you for doing such a great job.

REACH (Resident Enpowerment Association of Citrus Heights) sponsored this forum - it was presented to the residents of Citrus Heights to help clarify and sort out the information. Who stands for what?

I guess the main reason I am putting up another post on our candidates in Citrus Heights is to give you every opportunity to educate yourself and
MAKE SURE THAT YOU VOTE on November 6th

Historic Sylvan Cemetery Tour
Historic Sylvan Cemetery, which just recently celebrated its 150th anniversary, will be conducting a guided tour of it’s grounds on Saturday, October 27th at 11:00 am, in conjunction with October Family History Month.

(NOTE: We are asking that anyone interested in touring please arrive at Sylvan Cemetery by 11:00 am.  The tour will start between 11:00 and 11:15.  The tour will last about 1 hour.  There is no charge for this but if you would like to donate to the building of our bell tower then please do).

Thousands of Sacramento area veterans and citizens have been buried at Sylvan Cemetery since its 1862 inception.  The Board of Trustees, in recognition of this very stately and historic location, is commissioning the construction of a bell tower to honor the deceased which will also serve as a fitting tribute to the rich history of those buried within the cemetery walls.

Sylvan is a historic cemetery that is the resting place of over 1,300 veterans from the Civil War, Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam Conflict and the Gulf War.  It is also home to founding families and early settlers of Citrus Heights and Fair Oaks, including the Van Maren, Rusch, Volle and Ose families.  More than 8,000 local residents are interred at Sylvan.

Are you registered to VOTE on November 6?

Are you registered to vote on November 6? Have you been reading up everything?
I know, I know........  I am tired of the whole thing too, and it will finally end with all these lawn posters, sign & posters everywhere, flyers, junk mail, commercials on the radio, on television, on my computer, on the news and on the telephone, voice mail, texts, facebook and twitter....... It is a necessary evil but why must we be driven to drink with so much.

I am so ready to vote, make my one voice be heard, let the votes fall where they may (hoping that my vote makes the difference with the way I vote) AND then it is over ......  the ads & commercials will stop (and the Christmas Holiday ads will start and drive us all crazy too........)

I am not writing this to be political, I just want to bring to your attention Measure K & N IF you are not aware yet.........

Measure K is strictly a Citrus Heights measure. My understanding is it is a tax, but a limited tax with strict guidelines. It does not need a simple majority to pass it needs a 2/3 vote to pass. To me that suggests that the City wants to make sure that the citizens of the city are behind this measure. It suggests that it will help to speed up our repairs of our aging residentials roads. We do have alot of roads to keep up and repairs are needed on alot of these residential roads. It suggests that it  will also help with crime reduction for our police department. We have reserves, but look around at alot of the other cities in California and ask yourself why did they go bankrupt? Poor use of their funds, bad investments, used up all their reserve and more on things that might have happened but didn't. You decide.

For more information go to City of Citrus Heights Website   You will see rebuttals for & against Measure K and then arguments for & against the rebuttals of the for & against. I have read through them all and quite frankly I find some of it just plain garbage and just saying something just to fill up the paper. You read them, and then you decide.

Measure N is strictly for the San Juan Unified School District.......  the money is to be used for modernizing classrooms, safety upgrades and other needs. Most San Juan Unified schools are more than 50 years old and in need of upgrades to provide adequate technology, science labs and to replace deteriorating portables with permanent facilities. Upgrades to energy efficiency of schools will also save valuable funds that can be used to directly support teaching and learning.
For More information -  Yes on Measure N  or Sacramento Bee

Whatever you decide, please VOTE on November 6th............. Thank You.

Disclaimer: This is not meant to be an endorsement of either Measure, this is simply meant to bring to your attention that there are two measures on the November Ballot that will affect us locally. I do encourage comments but I will not be engaged in a debate or have words over this posting........ it is meant simply for information, you make up your own mind. Thank You.

West Nile Virus Activity Continues in Sacramento

WEST NILE VIRUS ACTIVITY CONTINUES TO BE WIDESPREAD THROUGHOUT SACRAMENTO AND YOLO COUNTIES

--District suspends dead bird collection program

Elk Grove, Calif.— West Nile virus activity continues to be widespread and the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District reported 25 mosquito samples and 18 dead birds have tested positive for disease so far this week. “While we’re near the end of summer, we’re still seeing West Nile virus activity” said David Brown, District Manager. “Mosquito season is not over yet and we can’t let our guard down” added Brown. In addition, there are also 6 confirmed human cases of the disease reported in Sacramento County including one confirmed death. In Yolo County, there are 3 confirmed human cases being reported. “Traditionally we see the number of human cases increase in September, so we urge you to always protect yourself with an effective mosquito repellent, it’s a quick and easy precaution that could save your life” added Brown.

This season, reports of dead birds from the public have been a very valuable tool in the District’s surveillance program, however due to the widespread activity and the limited resources, staff will no longer be able to pick up dead birds. “We encourage the public to still call the dead bird hotline and make those reports. They will be tracked by the California Department of Public Health and the information helps us target our mosquito control efforts” indicated Brown. Picking up dead birds will resume again in the spring of 2013 when the new season begins. To report dead birds, residents may call dead bird hotline at 1-877-968-2473.

Throughout California, West Nile virus activity has also increased and to date there are 92 human cases compared to only 48 at this time last year. Nationwide, WNV activity has also intensified and there are 2636 human cases and 118 deaths being reported.

The District will continue trapping and testing mosquitoes as well as conducting ground treatments to reduce mosquito populations as necessary. For current information about any treatments planned within Sacramento or Yolo Counties please visit www.FIGHTtheBITE.net. Residents may also subscribe to mailing lists to receive email notifications for mosquito treatments by zip code.

2012 West Nile virus activity update:

Sacramento County:  6 human cases, 461 dead birds, 447 mosquito samples, 24 sentinel animals, 2 horses have tested positive for West Nile virus to date.

Yolo County: 3 human cases,  90 dead birds, 142 mosquito samples, 1 horse, 3 sentinel animals have tested positive for West Nile virus to date

Sylvan Ranch Community Garden Spaghetti Dinner wrap-up

The Spaghetti Dinner fund raiser for the Sylvan Ranch Community Garden was sucessful in every way.........  the dinner was outstanding. I loved the spaghetti squash, so sweet. Alot of the ingredients in the spaghetti sauce along with the freshly made breads - banana, zuchinni and pumpkin & the spaghetti squash were made with vegetables from our garden........  tomatoes in abundance, lots of zuchinni and pumpkins & squash. Even some the herbs and spices that were used in the sauce were also grown in the garden. What a great way of sharing with the community. The community rallied around the Community Garden Dinner. Thank you so much. The (Citrus Heights Community Clubhouse) little one room schoolhouse was full and overflowing. The parking lot was also full and overflowing. Windows and doors were opened to let the sweet fresh air of the evening to come in. There was also support from a number of council members including our mayor and several of the council candidates. Thank you all for your support. It was a very good night.

Did you know that there was a silent auction - oh my goodness, there were so many wonderful gifts that had been donated for this event from individuals and many of our local businesses.......
Citrus Heights Saw & Mower
Halls Furniture
Amy's Pet Grooming
Bank of America
Costco
Green Acres
O'Reilly Auto Parts
Runs with Scissors
Sam's Club
Wonderful Chinese Restaurant
and Gifts from the Garden itself

As Ed Sullivan use to say.... "Let's Give Them all a REALLLLLY Big Hand"...  thanks to everyone for their support for our local activities.

[Personally I won a TEMPURpedic pillow. I was so excited and so were others too because I had to keep an eye on it as it kept moving around the room ..... but it went home with me & I have to say it really is so comfortable. I really love it. Thank You Halls Furniture- ((my mother taught me well - I sent Halls a thank you note for their participation and support) Another gift I won included two hand made knitted adult hats - thank you. I know what skills it takes to produce these hats. Thank You.]

The computer and projector were set up on the stage area so that everyone could enjoy the pictures of the garden, workdays, plot sucesses and failures and  the progress and activities in the garden itself....... this was a very nice touch.

The staffing for this event were soooooooo friendly, asking if they could get something else for you, or bring you something or throw your garbage away or bring you some drink, water, pie, MORE candy or or or or or. It really was wonderful.  They even had staff out in the parking lot to help direct traffic. The parking lot was very full and there were cars parked on ALL sides of this little schoolhouse and in some places two and three  maybe four deep.  But no mishaps and everyone got parked. The raffle ticket sellers were on the ball and sold tickets to young and old alike.

Interested in a bed/plot at the garden? There are still a few left. Lots of help and encouragement.  But the end result is amazingly good tasting vegetables and fruits and herbs. Try it, you might like it.

NEWS RELEASE
FIFTH NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE-BACK DAY RESULTS IN ANOTHER BIG HAUL
Northern and Central Valley Residents Dispose of More Than 12 Tons
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. –For the fifth time in two years, Americans emptied medicine cabinets, bedside tables, and kitchen drawers of unwanted, unused, and expired prescription drugs and took them to collection sites located throughout the United States as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
Last Saturday, September 29, in Northern and Central California, 107 state and local law enforcement partners, working at 156 locations, collected 23,329 pounds (more than 12 tons) of prescription medications from members of the public. When added to the collections in Northern and Central California from DEA’s previous four Take-Back events, nearly 100,000 pounds of prescription medications have been removed from circulation. A total of 488,395 pounds (244 tons) was collected nationwide during this most recent event.
According to the 2011 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), more than six million Americans abuse prescription drugs. That same study revealed more than 70 percent of people abusing prescription pain relievers got them through friends or relatives, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications.
The DEA’s Take-Back events are a significant piece of the White House’s prescription drug abuse prevention strategy released in 2011 by the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Disposal of unwanted, unused or expired drugs is one of four strategies for reducing prescription drug abuse and diversion laid out in Epidemic: Responding to America’s Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis. The other strategies include education of health care providers, patients, parents and youth; enhancing and encouraging the establishment of prescription drug monitoring programs in all the states; and increased enforcement to address doctor shopping and pill mills.
Shortly after DEA’s first Take-Back Day event two years ago, Congress passed, and President Obama signed, the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, which amended the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), allowing DEA to develop permanent, ongoing, and responsible methods for
disposal. Prior to the passage of the Disposal Act, the CSA provided no legal means for transferring possession of controlled substance medications from users to other individuals for disposal. DEA is currently in the process of drafting regulations, but until the creation of permanent regulations, DEA will continue to hold Take-Back Days.
