Military Monday - 110 year error put right

A late update from Sylvan Cemetery, but as you can see from the story too, better late than never at all.

Jim Monteton, long time resident & neighborhood leader in Citrus Heights, found that a number of Civil War Veterans buried in our local cemetery - Sylvan Cemetery - were buried without headstones. A small flimsy metal piece was left as a marker waiting for a headstone that never arrived. Jim took it upon himself to go through the process, the paper maze through the Department of Veteran Affairs to get one headstone (at first)....

 On September 3, 1901, Theodore Collins Fitch died. He was a veteran of the American Civil War and had served from the beginning in 1861 all the way to it’s conclusion in 1865. He served in the 6^th Ohio Infantry and the 121^st Ohio Infantry, rising from private to the rank of Captain by wars end. He was laid to rest in the Sylvan Cemetery in Citrus Heights, California.

 

On Saturday 29th of October 2011 the headstone was put in place, Honor Guard presentation, "6" Gun Salute, Bagpipper, celebatory wreaths and the 'grieving' widow (just to complete the picture), Channel 3 taping, hundred or more spectators plus City Leaders attending.

 

 

Now I think it will be time for the others at the Sylvan Cemetery to receive their proper headstones.

Sylvan Cemetery- Citrus Heights overdue headstone for Civil War Veteran buried 110 years ago

THEODORE COLLINS FITCH, Captain Union Army 1865 – 121^st Ohio Infantry

Born September 13, 1838 – Died September 3, 1901

On September 3, 1901, Theodore Collins Fitch died.  He was a veteran of the American Civil War and had served from the beginning in 1861 all the way to it’s conclusion in 1865.  He served in the 6^th Ohio Infantry and the 121^st Ohio Infantry, rising from private to the rank of Captain by wars end.  He was laid to rest in the Sylvan Cemetery in Citrus Heights, California.

Captain Theodore Collins Fitch did not receive a headstone for his grave site.  Instead there is simple metal bar in the ground with a small metal tag with his name, age, date of death and that he was a Civil War Veteran.  Over the 110 years since his death the tag has been bent and wrinkled to the point that it could no longer be read.  His final resting place almost became an un-marked grave.

After six months of research and building a document file on Capt. Fitch, a request was made of the Department of Veterans Affair for a proper military style headstone to place at the grave site.  In mid September, the headstone arrived at the Sylvan Cemetery.  It is a white marble, military style headstone with all of the information to describe the final resting place of an American Veteran. 

On Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 11:00 am, there will be a dedication ceremony at the Sylvan Cemetery in Citrus Heights, CA.  Members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Sons of Veterans Reserve Company B, 8 Calif. Infantry Regiment, will take part in the ceremony – dressed in Civil War Union Blue uniforms.  There will be musket salute, drum and bugle and a formal color guard.  The public is invited and encouraged to attend to pay tribute to an American Veteran who did not receive the recognition that all veterans deserve.

Capitol Pops Concert Band lights up the Citrus Heights Community Center on Oct. 15

"An Evening with the Capitol Pops Concert Band" is set for 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at the Citrus Heights Community Center, 6300 Fountain Square Drive.
Under the baton of Director Jerry Lopes, CPCB concerts feature Broadway show tunes, movie themes, marches and patriotic songs, as well as old/new popular standards. For more than a dozen years, the band has performed at venues and events throughout the Sacramento area, including the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee and the west steps of the Capitol in downtown Sacramento.

The Oct. 15 concert is sponsored by the City of Citrus Heights. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available for purchase on-site.

Director Lopes will add to the concert’s fall flair by featuring some spooky Halloween tunes and some lively polka music in honor of international Oktoberfest celebrations. The Citrus Heights concert also will feature vocalists and instrumental soloists.

Musicians in the Capitol Pops Concert band span a wide range of ages, from students to nonagenarians. The CPCB scholarship fund provides private music lessons for interested students.

Started in 1997, the Capitol Pops Concert Band has performed a diverse portfolio of high-quality, well-prepared music heard by thousands of concert-goers throughout Northern California. Based in Fair Oaks, the self-supporting, nonprofit band of about 75 musicians represents a wide cross-section of the Sacramento area.

3rd Annual Holiday Referral Program through the Citrus Heights Police Dept

It is that time of year to begin working on our 3rd Annual Holiday Referral Program.  We are planning to start advertising and releasing the application on September 26, 2011.  Please keep an eye out for families that could benefit from this program.  Due to the large numbers of referred families last year, we will be shortening the “open enrollment” period for the applications. We expect to open the process on October 3, 2011 and close it on October 14, 2011. We have also made a few changes to the program that we felt would benefit everyone involved in the program.  These changes are reflected in the attachments titled “Information Sheet”  and “Program Information.”     This will give us 6 weeks to evaluate families and children you are in contact with.

We are also asking that anyone interested in holding a donation drive (i.e., food drive, toy drive, etc.) for this year’s program to choose a category listed in the attachment “Donation Request.”  If each club, school, or business could focus on collecting “like items” in the categories attached, we can provide each family with the same food items. We have come up with these categories based on last year’s needs.  However, please feel free to make any suggestions if you feel we are missing something. 

We are also expecting to receive a lot of donations from the community and due to the limited space and time we plan on accepting donations starting November 14, 2011 and ending on December 1, 2011.  If any of the clubs or schools plan on holding a donation drive before November 14^th we will try to make arrangements to store the items.  We are grateful for any help we can receive from the community; however, there is only limited space for storage and we want the adopting families to have adequate time to choose items for their family. 

For the service clubs and schools, please talk with your clubs/organizations regarding their participation in this program.  We will take any help they are willing to give.  We will also be setting up a meeting around the second or third week of September to discuss this program in further detail. 

I have attached the tentative program timeline, application draft, information sheet, and possible donation categories to this email.  All of these documents are still being updated and are not “set in stone”, so please feel free to review them and make suggestions.   We look forward to another great year and hope that the changes noted in the documents attached will assist with better organization, like items, and more time for family interviews.

PRESCRIPTION DRUG PROGRAM through Sacramento County

Through a neighborhood leader Jim Monteton: "Last Friday  (August 26, 2011) I attended the District 4 breakfast that Roberta MacGlashan holds every month.  During that meeting a presentation by the Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services was made the identified a Prescription Drug Program that exists in the county that is available to all residents.  It costs nothing and you don't have to join any thing or fill out paper work.  You simply go to the web site listed below and print out a Drug Prescription card.  Then when you go to your pharmacy show the card and get a discount on all prescriptions.  It could be as much as 40-70% off.  At the web site you can check locations and pharmacy's within Citrus Heights."

"Again no gimmicks; no membership; no cost to you.  It's funded by Sacramento county.  It's one of those unknown secrets.  Any way please try it and pass the info on to your neighborhood residents - print the card and take it with you on your next pharmacy visit."
