Hidden Treasures!!

The City of Citrus Heights and the History and Arts Commission takes pride in preserving the history of Citrus Heights. The City's Hidden Treasures will be on display February 8, 9, 15, 16, and 17, 2014 at Sunrise Mall (Northeast Corner of the Mall, near Macy's Men), from Noon to 5:00 p.m.

The City's Collection of Hidden Treasures Consist of: Citrus Heights' Permanent Art Collection, historic items from the Ladies in White and Ladies Auxiliary, as well as Artifacts gifted to the City by the residents.

SPAY DAY 2014: Sacramento Area Animal Coalition is once again presenting SPAY DAY on February 23, 2014 - an opportunity for low-income families to have their dogs and cats spayed or neutered for a deep discount - $15 cats/$20 dogs - and includes vaccinations and microchips with lifetime registration. Limit 2 pets per household.

Changes to City Hall Complex??? Get Involved

Here is another chance to get involved with your community, voice your opinion and be heard.

The City of Citrus Heights received an application for a project which would result in changes to the current City Hall grounds. The initial project submitted in July 2013 involved demolishing all of the existing buildings on the civic center campus, except for the police services building. The July plans showed a proposed new City Hall building, and a new three-story medical office building at the corner of Greenback Lane and Fountain Square Drive. In August 2013, a community workshop was held where a variety of input was given by the community.

Due to community input received in August, significant changes have already been made to the proposed project. The medical office building is still located in the same general vicinity, near the corner of Fountain Square Drive and Greenback Lane and City Hall has been removed from the project site and is anticipated to be constructed at a new location.

The City will be hosting a community meeting on January 15, 2014, in the Citrus Heights Community Center (6300 Fountain Square Drive, next to Sam's Club). This meeting will provide updated information on BOTH the proposed new medical office building and the proposed new City Hall.

At their regular City Council meeting on December 12, 2013, the City Council appointed Mel Tuner as mayor and Sue Frost as vice mayor for the next twelve months.

Each year, in December, the City Council selects one of its members to serve a one-year term as mayor and vice mayor. Mel Turner was elected to the City Council in November 2010, for a four-year term. Sue Frost was elected to the City Council in November 2012 for a four-year term.

Food Drive Unites Neighbors

 

Neighbors were greeted with a warmly decorated room filled with the aroma of turkey, ham, pie, and more, as Sunrise Ranch Neighborhood kicked off a neighborhood potluck dinner and food drive, Thursday night.

"I think we had a good time", said Doyle Champlain, president of Citrus Heights' Neighborhood Area 6. "I was pleased with the results, meeting some brand new folks, and getting good food donations for the church food closet."

 

 

 

A spirit of giving was also in the air as guests were offered a free bouquet of flowers, and two raffle winners each won a gift bag of Christmas sweets. The local food closet, run by the Twin Oaks Avenue Baptist Church -where the potluck was hosted- also received generous donations to help feed those in need.

Events like this are planned and discussed at the monthly meetings of Area 6 residents, as part of a way to bring the community together, solve problems, and make suggestions to the city for improvement.

City Working to Stop Speeders, and Start Creek Trails

Cirtus Heights working to stop speeders, and start creek trails

Packed into a Sunday school room of Twin Oaks Ave Baptist Church, about two dozen Citrus Heights residents attended the monthly meeting for Sunrise Ranch Neighborhood Area 6 on Tuesday.

The meeting kicked off with a monthly update from a Citrus Heights Police officer who gave a report on crime in the area, noting that crime was considerably lower in Area 6 compared to other areas of the city. He passed out a newsletter showing only 10 crimes were reported for this area in the past month, commenting that nearly half the crime could be prevented if people would remove their valuables from plain sight in their vehicles.

• The officer also gave an update on the Department's recent effort to monitor speeding more closely on Mariposa Ave – as Area 6 members had requested at the last meeting. Although police responded with targeted patrols on the street, the officer cautioned that local speed limit crackdowns often lead to upset neighbors who get pulled over.

Following next was a powerpoint presentation by representatives from the Creek Corridor Trail Project who gave an update on the City's research and assessment process of a 20-year plan to create a system of creek-side trails in Citrus Heights.

• According to Senior Planner Casey Kempenaar, the City has 26 miles of creeks running through it, but their research has already eliminated eight miles of trails due to geographical constraints as well as private property ownership of areas where public trails would be desired.

• As far as Area 6 residents are concerned, plans for trails in this area are all but gone, except for a small slivers of Mariposa Creek near Old Auburn Rd. and Mariposa Ave.

The meeting closed with a progress update from Area 6 Chairman Doyle Champlain on the Auburn Blvd renovation project, mentioning that the City had announced it is nearing completion of the section from Antelope to Sylvan Oaks.

The Citrus Heights post of the American Legion #637 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold a Veterans Day service on Monday, November 11, 2013 at the Veterans Memorial and gazebo located at the Sylvan Cemetry. This service wil honor all those who served in the defense of this great nation. The event is hosted by the American Legion, Post #637, Commanded by Paul Reyes and by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Invited speakers are Supervisor 4th District Roberta MacGlasham, Citrus Heights Mayor Steve Miller, Citrus Heights Police Chief Christopher Boyd and members of the Citrus Heights city council. Other present will be Citrus Heights Boy Scott Troop 3228, the Folsom Harmony Express singers, the Citrus Heights Police Department Honor Guard and bugler Ray Latimer.

New Art at Citrus Heights City Hall - Featured Artist Sean Goin

Did you know that City Hall is decorated and features local artists? Yes they do and it is wonderful. Make sure you put Citrus Heights City Hall on your places to go every couple of months. Learn about new local artists and enjoy their work.

Art in City Hall is sponsored by the city's History and Arts Commission and features the exhibitions of local artists in various buildings in the Citrus Heights Civic Center Complex, located at 6237 Fountain Square Drive. A new exhibition is featured every two months and generally includes the work of two to three artists. The public is invited to view the art collection at  City Hall during regular business hours. To receive e-mail notifications when there is a new exhibit, sign up for the city's E-Notifier service  (this is a very good thing and everyone that wants to keep up with what is going within their city of Citrus Heights should be signed up)

The current Art in City Hall exhibit features the artwork of Sean Goin. A local artist, Sean resides in Citrus Heights, California and is a graduate of Casa Robles High School. Sean uses color pencil on paper to create a very colorful variety of subject matter. The current Art in City Hall show will remain on display until approximately January 15th. Holiday Opportunities for Permanent Employment

Here are two more opportunities for employment; this time through the City of Citrus Heights Police Department

The department is seeking a Police Records Assistant I and a Police Records Assistant II

The Assistant I job, an entry-level position, pays between $34,000 and $41,000. It requires "only limited or no directly related work experience," and includes an 18-month probationary period, according to the department.
According to the department, the job requirements include:

• Experience and Training: One year of public contact work experience, in person or over the telephone that demonstrates a general aptitude for working with the public in a multi-task environment
• Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.
• License or Certificates: May need to possess a valid California Driver's License and proof of automobile liability insurance.

That job is limited to the first 50 applicants. (Get those applications together and get them in now)

The department is also looking for an Assistant II, a position requiring "at least three years of specialized police records experience." The salary range for that job is between $38,000 and $45,000. The deadline to apply is Dec. 21. (time to apply now)
Its requirements are:

• Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.

October 4 Citrus Heights Council Candidates Forum - update

What a great opportunity to be able to go to one place and listen to all of the  candidates that are running for the 2 open seats for the City of Citrus Heights Council......  It really makes a difference. The Open House  is on Monday November 5, 2012 at the Historic Rusch Home, 7301 Auburn Blvd, Citrus Heights. It will begin at 5:30 pm to 7pm.   It will be open to the public whoever is interested in learning more about the Rusch Home, its history and its potential future.

Historic Sylvan Cemetery Tour

Historic Sylvan Cemetery, which just recently celebrated its 150^th anniversary, will be conducting a guided tour of it’s grounds on Saturday, October 27^th at 11:00 am, in conjunction with October Family History Month. 

 (NOTE: We are asking that anyone interested in touring please arrive at Sylvan Cemetery by 11:00 am.  The tour will start between 11:00 and 11:15.  The tour will last about 1 hour.  There is no charge for this but if you would like to donate to the building of our bell tower then please do).

Thousands of Sacramento area veterans and citizens have been buried at Sylvan Cemetery since its 1862 inception.  The Board of Trustees, in recognition of this very stately and historic location, is commissioning the construction of a bell tower to honor the deceased which will also serve as a fitting tribute to the rich history of those buried within the cemetery walls. 

Sylvan is a historic cemetery that is the resting place of over 1,300 veterans from the Civil War, Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam Conflict and the Gulf War.  It is also home to founding families and early settlers of Citrus Heights and Fair Oaks, including the Van Maren, Rusch, Volle and Ose families.  More than 8,000 local residents are interred at Sylvan.

Are you registered to VOTE on November 6?

Are you registered to vote on November 6? Have you been reading up everything?
I know, I know........  I am tired of the whole thing too, and it will finally end with all these lawn posters, sign & posters everywhere, flyers, junk mail, commercials on the radio, on television, on my computer, on the news and on the telephone, voice mail, texts, facebook and twitter....... It is a necessary evil but why must we be driven to drink with so much.

I am so ready to vote, make my one voice be heard, let the votes fall where they may (hoping that my vote makes the difference with the way I vote) AND then it is over ......  the ads & commercials will stop (and the Christmas Holiday ads will start and drive us all crazy too........)

I am not writing this to be political, I just want to bring to your attention Measure K & N IF you are not aware yet.........

Measure K is strictly a Citrus Heights measure. My understanding is it is a tax, but a limited tax with strict guidelines. It does not need a simple majority to pass it needs a 2/3 vote to pass. To me that suggests that the City wants to make sure that the citizens of the city are behind this measure. It suggests that it will help to speed up our repairs of our aging residentials roads. We do have alot of roads to keep up and repairs are needed on alot of these residential roads. It suggests that it  will also help with crime reduction for our police department. We have reserves, but look around at alot of the other cities in California and ask yourself why did they go bankrupt? Poor use of their funds, bad investments, used up all their reserve and more on things that might have happened but didn't. You decide.

For more information go to City of Citrus Heights Website   You will see rebuttals for & against Measure K and then arguments for & against the rebuttals of the for & against. I have read through them all and quite frankly I find some of it just plain garbage and just saying something just to fill up the paper. You read them, and then you decide.

Measure N is strictly for the San Juan Unified School District.......  the money is to be used for modernizing classrooms, safety upgrades and other needs. Most San Juan Unified schools are more than 50 years old and in need of upgrades to provide adequate technology, science labs and to replace deteriorating portables with permanent facilities. Upgrades to energy efficiency of schools will also save valuable funds that can be used to directly support teaching and learning.

West Nile Virus Activity Continues in Sacramento

WEST NILE VIRUS ACTIVITY CONTINUES TO BE WIDESPREAD THROUGHOUT SACRAMENTO AND YOLO COUNTIES

--District suspends dead bird collection program

Elk Grove, Calif.— West Nile virus activity continues to be widespread and the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District reported 25 mosquito samples and 18 dead birds have tested positive for disease so far this week. “While we’re near the end of summer, we’re still seeing West Nile virus activity” said David Brown, District Manager. “Mosquito season is not over yet and we can’t let our guard down” added Brown. In addition, there are also 6 confirmed human cases of the disease reported in Sacramento County including one confirmed death. In Yolo County, there are 3 confirmed human cases being reported. “Traditionally we see the number of human cases increase in September, so we urge you to always protect yourself with an effective mosquito repellent, it’s a quick and easy precaution that could save your life” added Brown.

This season, reports of dead birds from the public have been a very valuable tool in the District’s surveillance program, however due to the widespread activity and the limited resources, staff will no longer be able to pick up dead birds. “We encourage the public to still call the dead bird hotline and make those reports. They will be tracked by the California Department of Public Health and the information helps us target our mosquito control efforts” indicated Brown. Picking up dead birds will resume again in the spring of 2013 when the new season begins. To report dead birds, residents may call dead bird hotline at 1-877-968-2473.

Throughout California, West Nile virus activity has also increased and to date there are 92 human cases compared to only 48 at this time last year. Nationwide, WNV activity has also intensified and there are 2636 human cases and 118 deaths being reported.

The District will continue trapping and testing mosquitoes as well as conducting ground treatments to reduce mosquito populations as necessary. 2012 West Nile virus activity update:

Sacramento County:  6 human cases, 461 dead birds, 447 mosquito samples, 24 sentinel animals, 2 horses have tested positive for West Nile virus to date.

Yolo County: 3 human cases,  90 dead birds, 142 mosquito samples, 1 horse, 3 sentinel animals have tested positive for West Nile virus to date

Auburn Blvd. Project - Did you know......?

DID YOU KNOW?  Starting September 19th, the City of Citrus Heights will be hosting an open meeting every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Rusch Park (7801 Auburn Boulevard), in conference room #4. The meeting is casual and open for businesses, property owners or residents to drop in with their questions regarding the construction along Auburn Boulevard. Staff will be available to answer your questions and coffee will be served!

Location: Rusch Park (7801 Auburn Boulevard), Conference room #4 is located in the northwest corner of the gym building. Entrance door is on the west face of the building.

Parking: Please use the parking lot behind the building (west side). Do not park in front of Rusch Park's main office.
